Attending one of the star ceremonies for the Hollywood Walk of Fame has been on my bucket list since I moved back to California. I attended the star ceremony for Debra Messing. There was a Will and Grace cast reunion at her star ceremony with Megan Mullally and Eric McCormack in attendance. If you would like to attend an upcoming Walk of Fame Star Ceremony I highly recommend it!

The stars on the Walk of Fame are located on the sidewalks of Hollywood Blvd and Vine. Famous names are on the stars along with symbols that indicate what category the star was presented in. Star categories are broadcast television, motion pictures, audio recording or music, broadcast radio, or theatre/live performance.

Debra Messing’s star is in the television broadcast category. While Debra also acts in movies and theatre she is best known for her work on the television series Will and Grace. Did you know that you can attend a live taping of Will & Grace? On rare occasions, some people will be awarded multiple stars for different categories.

How To Find Out About An Upcoming Walk of Fame Star Ceremony

The ceremonies are free to attend. However, the viewing area for the fans is limited so be sure to arrive early. My friend and I arrived about five hours early which was unnecessary since not many people showed up. However, for the N’SYNC star ceremony over 5,000 fans showed up. It is hard to truly know how popular certain ceremonies will be. But since it was our first one to attend we didn’t know what a good time to arrive would be.

For a ceremony that starts at 11:30 am, I would recommend arriving between 8:30 am and 9 am. Around that time security should start letting fans into the viewing area. Most ceremonies are done by 12:15 pm. Information on who is getting a star and where the location of the star is can be found on the Walk of Fame website. The woman in charge of the ceremonies is Ana Martinez whom I follow on twitter. She is full of helpful information so I recommend also using her account as a planning tool.

Every star ceremony has guest speakers. Max Mutchnick, a co-creator of Will and Grace, spoke about Debra. He shared about casting Debra as Grace Adler for the series and what a joy it has been to work with her. The other speaker was Mariska Hargitay who is a close friend of Debra’s. They met at the Emmy’s several years ago and have been friends since. Mariska was very emotional when she spoke about what a great friend Debra is and how brightly she shines as a person.

In most cases, you will have an easier time meeting the presenters and special guests at the ceremonies as they are not going to be needed as much as the one receiving the star. That being said though Chris Pratt signed a few autographs at his star ceremony. Every single experience will be different.

After the speakers shared how much they love and admire Debra, it was her turn to speak. Debra grew up on the east coast but visited Hollywood as a young child. She remembers seeing a movie at the TCL Chinese Theatre and seeing the stars on the Walk of Fame. What touched me the most about Debra’s speech was how supportive her mother was of her acting dreams. Almost everyone pursuing a career in Hollywood can relate to having family & friends who think they are crazy for following their dreams. Debra shared several stories that proved that her mother believed in her dream just as much as she did.

Hollywood Walk of Fame Ceremony Tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes. You will be doing a lot of standing and depending on where you park you will have a walk to the ceremony area.
  • Bring snacks and a water bottle. If you arrive early you will most likely be at the event for five hours. Plan accordingly.
  • Bring sunscreen, a hat, and/or an umbrella. You will most likely be in the sun the entire time.
  • Bringing a selfie stick will help you get a better view if you’re short.
  • Chairs and step ladders are not allowed.
  • Have a sharpie and something that you might like to have autographed. My friend had brought a Will and Grace shirt which the creator of the show signed. In some instances, people will be more likely to give an autograph vs taking a photo. However, that can change from person to person.
  • When I can I love bringing my instax mini to take a quick picture and then have the picture autographed.
  • Consider taking the metro so that way you don’t have to stress out about potentially needing to move your car.
  • Most places in Hollywood require some kind of purchase to use the restroom.  I had to buy a donut at Dunkin which wasn’t the end of the world.

I really hope that you are able to have this experience at least once and that this guide will help you out!
