Did you know that anyone can attend free SAG Indie Low Budget Film Workshops? The best part is that you do not have to be a member of SAG in order to attend. I found out about this event thanks to a wonderful Facebook group that I belong to with fellow creatives. Once I was ready to move forward with the short film I wanted to attend the workshop to learn about how I could make my project SAG.
If you don’t know what SAG is it is the Screen Actors Guild which is a union that was created to protect actors. SAG Indie is a wonderful resource that guides filmmakers through the SAG-AFTRA signatory process. Believe it or not, it is not that difficult to hire SAG actors regardless of your budget.
With the coronavirus, it is understandable that everything is on hold for the moment. However, when this all clears up this is the link to sign up. The workshops are offered on the second Thursday of each month. You are able to bring a guest with you as long as you register them.
The workshop takes place at SAG-AFTRA LA Local 5757 Wilshire Blvd, 1st Fl
Los Angeles, CA 90036. They provide you with information on where to park and are able to validate your parking ticket. Upon checking in you are given a small workbook and a very nice pen with a mini flashlight that you get to keep.
The workshop will last for at least an hour. It starts with the explanation of various contracts depending on the budget. The staff provides thorough and helpful information to give you an idea of what you will need to do. Once they are done with their presentation they open the floor for questions.
This is a wonderful resource for new filmmakers and those who want to make sure they are playing by SAG rules. I highly recommend the SAG Indie Low-Budget Film Workshops.
If you are looking for other resources for filmmakers the Writers Guild Library is really worth checking out. The Nicholl Fellowship Awards is something to check out as well.
